Philippine News: Former President Estrada Convicted.
MANILA, Philippines — Despite being convicted of plunder, deposed
president Joseph Estrada will continue to be allowed to receive visitors at his
Tanay, Rizal rest house where he is detained, a police official said Friday.”We
will allow the former president to [see] visitors except if there’s an order
from the court” banning visits, said Director Wilfredo Garcia, chief of the
Philippine National Police Directorate for Operations. However, media will not be
given access to the former president, part of court-ordered restrictions even
before his conviction, Chief Superintendent Romeo Hilomen, director of the
Police Security and Protection Office, said in a separate interview.Hilomen said
Estrada accepts the restrictions.Estrada, an action star before becoming a
president in 1998, was ousted in a military-backed popular uprising three years
later following allegations of graft. On Wednesday, he was convicted and
sentenced by the Sandiganbayan anti-graft court to reclusion perpetua or from 20
to 40 years’ imprisonment.Estrada is expected to appeal his conviction.
