Moscow - In the row over Iran’s controversial nuclear programme,
Russia warned the United States Saturday against additional unilateral sanctions
against Tehran now that a compromise resolution has been passed by the United
Nations Security Council.
Unilateral measures that have not been subjected
to a vote would damage common efforts to encourage Tehran to return to talks
about its nuclear programme, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in
Moscow.
The US hard line on Iran had wanted much stricter measures than
those decided by the Security Council in December, Lavrov said, adding that he
planned to discuss this during an upcoming visit to Washington on February 2.
Russian Security Council Secretary Igor Ivanov was expected for talks in
Tehran Saturday evening.
Ivanov was scheduled to meet with his Iranian
counterpart Ali Larijani, Iranian Foreign Minister Manuchehr Mottaki said.
Russia did vote for the UN resolution against Iran in December, but managed
to push through some amendments, including the exclusion of previously agreed
contracts, such as the delivery of Russian air defence systems to Iran in
January.
Moscow is also helping Tehran build its first nuclear reactor in
the city of Bushehr.

Rusia’s security Council Secretary Igor Ivanov was due to arrive
Saturday in Iran for talks with his Iranian counterpart Ali Larijani and other
officials, Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said. Mottaki told reporters in
Tehran that the visit is aimed at leading the course of the nuclear dispute
towards negotiations again. Ivanov was in Tehran last October and expressed hope
that Russia would settle the dispute over Iran’s controversial nuclear programme
within negotiations and outside the United Nations Security Council. But the UN
veto powers, including Russia, eventually approved last December the resolution
1737 which foresaw sanctions against Iran if the Islamic state did not suspend
uranium enrichment until end of February this year.

North Korea dismissed allegations Saturday that the communist regime is
cooperating with Iran in nuclear development, accusing Western media of
spreading the rumor to mislead public opinion.
The “assertion is nothing but
a sheer lie and fabrication intended to tarnish the image of (North Korea) by
charging it with nuclear proliferation,” the North’s Foreign Ministry said in a
statement carried by the North’s official Korean Central News Agency.

WASHINGTON - Democratic Sen. John Kerry, who fell 118,601 Ohio votes short of the White House in 2004, said Wednesday he will not run for president in 2008.

“We came close … certainly close enough to be tempted to try again,” the Massachusetts senator said, recalling his defeat.

“There are powerful reasons to want to continue that fight now. But I have concluded this isn’t the time for me to mount a presidential campaign.”

His decision leaves a field of nine Democrats running or signaling their intention to do so, including Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York and Barack Obama of Illinois, and John Edwards, Kerry’s 2004 vice presidential running mate.

The Republican field is similarly crowded, with Bush constitutionally barred from seeking a third term in office.

Officials said Kerry would seek a new six-year term in the Senate in 2008. The fourth-term lawmaker and decorated Vietnam War veteran said he would devote his time and energy to ending the conflict in Iraq.

He said he wanted President Bush’s successor to enter office with the United States having “a reasonable prospect of success” in Iraq.

“I don’t want the next president to find that they have inherited a nation still divided and a policy destined to end as Vietnam did - in a bitter and sad legacy,” he said.

An American GI assigned to one of the harshest posts in Iraq had a simple request last week for a Wisconsin mattress company: send some floor mats to help ease the hardship of sleeping on the cold, bug-infested ground.
What he got, instead, was a swift kick from the company’s Web site, which not only refused the request but added insult to injury with the admonition, “If you were sensible, you and your troops would pull out of Iraq.
Army Sgt. Jason Hess, stationed in Taji Iraq, with the 1st Cavalry Division, said he emailed his request to Discount-mats.com because he and his fellow soldiers sleep on the cold ground, which contains sand mites, sand flies and other disease carriers.

In his email, dated Jan. 16, 2007, he asked the Web-based company, registered to Faisal Khetani, an American Muslim of Pakistani descent:

“Do you ship to APO (military) addresses? I’m in the 1st Cavalry Division stationed in Iraq and we are trying to order some mats but we are looking for ships to APO first.”

On the same day, Hess received this reply:

“SGT Hess,

We do not ship to APO addresses, and even if we did, we would NEVER ship to Iraq. If you were sensible, you and your troops would pull out of Iraq.

It is not the first time mysterious figures have emerged from the jungle in Ratanakkiri.
In November 2004, 34 people from four hill tribe families emerged from the dense forest where they had fled in 1979 after the fall of the genocidal Khmer Rouge regime, which they supported.

They had lived in the jungle in total isolation for a quarter of a century, limiting speech for fear of detection and moving at any sight of an unfamiliar footprint or a freshly-cut tree.

Demographics: Since Muslim Keith Ellison’s election to Congress, there’s been a lot of noise in the media about the growing clout of the 8 million-Muslim electorate. Eight million?
‘There are 8 million Muslims in America now,” boasted a spokeswoman for something called the Muslim Advancement Society. She appeared on CNN to talk about what a proud day it was for her and other Muslim-Americans to see a Muslim brother sworn into Congress for the first time.
It seems the size of the Muslim population in America jumps by an additional million every other year or so. Just a couple of years ago the consensus number bandied about in the media was 7 million. Before 9/11 it was 6 million.
Politicians in Washington are intimidated by the figure. They believe it.
But it’s a wildly inflated estimate manufactured by the Council on American-Islamic Relations, something that the media could easily refute if they dared — simply by deconstructing CAIR’s unscientific methodology.
While the number of Muslims is growing thanks to higher birthrates and immigration, it’s nowhere near CAIR’s claim. Even the most generous independent estimate puts it at half that size, or 4 million.
Finding reliable data for Muslims in America is hard because the Census Bureau does not survey creed. So CAIR, which has an agenda to Islamize America, has overfilled the vacuum.
To come up with its own figure, it hired a “respected scholar” by the name of Ihsan Bagby to lead its “study.” But Bagby not only lacks independence — he’s a CAIR board member — he’s not even a trained demographer.
Worse, he admits the number he arrived at is a “guesstimation.” Here’s how he came up with it:
1. With help from CAIR researchers, Bagby called the nation’s 1,209 mosques and interviewed 416 of them, asking them how many people were involved in their mosque in any way. The average response was 1,625, which is probably high, given that two imams claimed 50,000 when the nation’s largest mosque — Dar al-Hijrah in the D.C. suburbs — has only about 3,000.
2. Bagby then multiplied that fuzzy participation figure by the 1,209 mosques and came up with 2 million “mosqued Muslims.”
3. Next, he multiplied that sum by a magical factor of three to capture Muslims who might not participate in mosque activities, and arrived at the original 6 million guesstimate for the size of the Muslim population in America.
He says his factor of three was an educated guess. More like a wild exaggeration. Or perhaps a political calculation, as it produced a number that conveniently matched the size — and potential political clout — of the Jewish population in the country, also estimated at 6 million.
CAIR then took the liberty of bumping up the Muslim count to 7 million. Now — presto — it’s at 8 million, and climbing.
“Today, 8 to 10 million Muslims live in the United States,” claims Navy Lt. Cmdr. Abuhena Mohammed Saifulislam, who serves as Muslim chaplain for the new Marine mosque at Quantico, Va.
The Pentagon, which recently promoted Saifulislam, does not question the number. Neither does the White House, Congress nor the media — no matter how fantastic the number gets.
But it’s the Wahhabi lobby’s big lie. CAIR and other militant Muslim groups use it to intimidate politicians, corporations and media to change policy.
Eight-million-strong Muslims make the threat of bloc voting and boycotts a lot scarier. And the bigger the number, the bigger the foothold Islamists gain in American society.
But don’t buy it. It’s a total exaggeration.

George Bush is preparing to make a historic shift in his position on global warming when he makes his State of the Union speech later this month, say senior Downing Street officials of British Prime Minister Tony Blair’s administration.

Blair hopes that the new stance by the United States will lead to a breakthrough in international talks on climate change and that the outlines of a successor treaty to the Kyoto agreement, the deal to curb emissions of greenhouse gases which expires in 2012, could now be thrashed out at the G8 summit in June.

The timetable may explain why Blair is so keen to remain in office until after the summit, with a deal on protecting the planet offering an appealing legacy with which to bow out of Number 10.

Bush and Blair held private talks on climate change before Christmas, and there is a feeling that the U.S. President will now agree to a cap on emissions in the U.S., meaning that, for the first time, American industry and consumers would be expected to start conserving energy and curbing pollution.

“We could now be seeing the beginning of a consensus on a post-Kyoto framework,” said a source close to the prime minister. “President Bush is beginning to talk about more radical measures.”

The move will be seen as part of a wider repositioning of the Bush government after its comprehensive defeat in last autumn’s mid-term elections.

CARACAS, Venezuela - Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez and Iran’s Mahmoud Ahmadinejad - fiery anti-American leaders whose moves to extend their influence have alarmed Washington - said Saturday they would help finance investment projects in other countries seeking to thwart U.S. domination.

The two countries had previously revealed plans for a joint $2 billion fund to finance investments in Venezuela and Iran, but the leaders said Saturday the money would also be used for projects in friendly countries throughout the developing world.

“It will permit us to underpin investments … above all in those countries whose governments are making efforts to liberate themselves from the (U.S.) imperialist yoke,” Chavez said.

“This fund, my brother,” the Venezuelan president said, referring affectionately to Ahmadinejad, “will become a mechanism for liberation.”

“Death to U.S. imperialism!” Chavez said.

`We could pay our entire foreign debt with the reserves we have if we wanted to — that’s one of our strengths,” Chavez said in an annual address to the legislature.
